The minimum purchase age for alcohol is 18 years from 1 December 1999. The only exception in which a person under 18 may have a drink is if they are in a supervised area with a parent or legal guardian and that person buys and supplies the alcohol to the young person. Most other adults like aunts, uncles, grandparents or coaches will not qualify as 'legal guardians'.
There are four 'evidence of age' documents: NZ and overseas passport, NZ photographic driver licence, and the HANZ 18+ card. No other cards will be acceptable.
