E-Line Food and Beverage - June 2010

Welcome back to another issue of E-Line Food and Beverage!

Quickly looking through the menu of industry topics in this issue has somewhat influenced the theme of this year’s Hospitality Showcase – ‘Eating, Drinking and Politics’. On the national front, I spoke with the Dominion Post about our trading conditions how the industry has not seen any significant improvements which questions the strength of our economic recovery and the Government's budget decisions that will impact on our industry - click here to read the full article ‘Hospitality industry remains fragile’.

What’s on in the next couple of months? National President Bill McLean and I will be attending as many Branch AGMs this year and look forward to catching up with members. The Fine Food New Zealand Show will start on Sunday 13 to Tuesday 15 June at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland which HANZ are strongly supporting and participating with the Business of Hospitality Workshops (partnering with HSI), offering FREE HANZ seminars and of course our own trade stand will be exhibiting for the entire three days, make sure you come and say hello!

Don’t forget to submit your entries to the Awards for Excellence 2010 programme. We have 15 categories to accommodate all hospitality businesses, so feel free to enter one or more! All entries are due by Friday 18 June.

Cheers

Update from HANZ CEO

Sale of Liquor Update
Following the wide-sweeping recommendations in the Law Commission’s report, the Association quickly responded with HANZ CEO, Bruce Robertson fronting the media with significant coverage and engaged with all Members of Parliament by writing a letter that outlined the inconsistencies in the Law Commission’s report and highlighting the Association’s position. Already it has been pleasing that on the back of the Association’s public stance the government has already backed off any increase in excise tax.

The following links provide a summary of the Association’s strong voice in the public view and strengthens our position in what we believe to be a more relevant approach that ensures proposed changes will have more impact and ownership on the individual’s responsibility and behaviour.

Letter to All MPs the Law Commission’s report – Curbing the Harm

The Government continues to evaluate the Law Commission’s report and it is now expected that the Minister of Justice Simon Power will give the industry an indication of his thinking sometime in July, with legislation being introduced later in the year.

It is becoming increasingly clear that any legislative changes will not take place prior to the Rugby World Cup 2011.

MEMA Guidelines
A guide to the Major Events Management Act 2007 (MEMA) that covers marketing issues associated with RWC 2011 is now available on our website on the Industry Info & Issues webpage. We strongly encourage members to read and follow the general guidance of this document that will ensure your business operates within the guidelines of the RWC 2011 event.

For example the MEMA guideline explains that bars and restaurants can promote a rugby match that will be screened on their premises, but cannot suggest that they are associated with the RWC 2011. An example of this type of promotion can be viewed below.

To hear more about how you can effectively promote your business during the RWC 2011 event, we have arranged for Advertising Standards Authority Executive Director, Hilary Souter to present a FREE HANZ seminar – ‘Bugger, It’s OK – The Case of Advertising Self-Regulation’ talking about the current challenges around the promotion of the RWC 2011 and how you can still leverage your business opportunities with New Zealand’s biggest world sporting event!

Rugby World Cup Empowering Bill
There has been no sign of the Rugby World Cup Empowering Bill which is rumoured to establish a separate authority to grant liquor licences and resource consents for RWC activities.

Beer Prices
Based on the increase in excise tax DB have advised that they will be increasing tap beer by 2.9% and packaged beer by 3% from 1 July 2010. Lion Nathan is expected to follow suit shortly.

Food Bill
The Minister of Food Safety Kate Wilkinson has introduced a new Food Bill which will give effect to a requirement for those preparing and serving food to have in place a food control plan for their premises. The Food Bill is expected to have its first reading in the next couple of weeks and be referred to a Select Committee for submissions, and to come in to effect some time in the early to middle part of 2011.

ALAC Conference 2010
The Association was well represented at the ALAC Conference that was held on 6 and 7 May at the Telstra Clear Pacific Centre in Auckland with HANZ CEO, Bruce Robertson, Legal Adviser, Alyn Higgins and Regional Managers Sara Tucker and Nadine Mehlhopt in full attendance at the two day conference.

The conference theme “Time for Action” paved the way for key note speaker, Sir Geoffrey Palmer to speak on the Law Commission’s final report to Government who in conclusion broke down the number of recommendation in the areas of licensing (including age and hours), price, advertising, enforcement, promotion and treatment.
