Problems predicted following Queenstown hours decision

More public place disorder is predicted as a result of the Queenstown District Council’s decision to reduce closing hours for bars to 4am, says Bruce Robertson, Chief Executive of the Hospitality Association.

Forcing party goers out into the street at an arbitrary time is likely to cause more street disorder, not stop it. The public are better making their way home over time at a rate taxis can cope with, he said.

Queenstown is an international party destination which is at the heart of its economy. Messages which reduce that reputation are not helpful.

Mr Robertson suggested that it is the Council that will need to take responsibility for any up swing in disorder as a result of this change.
