Stay in control this summer

"New Zealanders should get out and enjoy plenty of revelry and hospitality this summer," says Bruce Robertson, Chief Executive, Hospitality Association. With New Zealanders working longer and harder than ever before taking some time out to have fun with friends and colleagues in bars and restaurants is well earned.

Mr Robertson said that the industry looked forward to hosting revellers over the festive season but asks them to respect the law and in particular the responsibilities that hospitality staff face. The law prohibits bar staff serving intoxicated persons or allowing them to be on licensed premises. The hospitality and tourism industry will be doing its best to help people enjoy themselves safely without becoming intoxicated.

Patrons should also have their own strategies to keep themselves safe while enjoying themselves. This should include consuming substantial food, pacing their consumption and interspersing alcoholic drinks with those of a non alcoholic variety.

This advice should not only be followed at licensed premises but also when socialising in private environments, said Mr Robertson.
