Increasing media commentary talking about an end to the recession can only have a positive impact on the business of hospitality. Many New Zealanders have spent the winter hunkered down to escape from the cold, but also concerned about their future. The emergence of an increasing trickle of good news provides the opportunity for the hospitality industry to pull New Zealanders out of their hibernation.
Much of the hibernation has been as a result of a negative state of mind rather than not having disposable income. The hospitality industry needs to understand this as a key ingredient in tapping into New Zealander’s preoccupation with a value proposition, without giving away margin. The recession has reinforced and exacerbated New Zealander’s passion for a bargain which sometimes is called “The Warehouse” mentality.
It seems that a value offering is a critical tool in getting New Zealander’s through the door. Once inside they can be readily encouraged to trade up. Despite the recession the majority of New Zealanders are still employed and still have money in their pockets. Some sun, and a positive approach from the industry should see the wallets being opened.
There is plenty for New Zealanders to enjoy as they emerge into the sunlight if the finalists in this year’s Hospitality Association Awards for Excellence are anything to go by. The finalists have now been announced and they demonstrate the continued raising of the bar in a very diversified hospitality offering. The depth and the quality of entries in each category show that many hospitality businesses are well placed to capture business growth as New Zealand moves out of this recessionary phase. The panel of industry experts were very challenged in differentiating among a quality field. Congratulations to all the finalists, and in particular to the winners which will be announced at Hospitality Showcase 2009 at Wairakei, Taupo, on 1 October.
